Production of synthetic rubbers plays an important role in engineering adhesives as well as human's life. Butyl rubber is one of the most useful synthetic rubbers which have been developed during past years and its derivatives such as halobutyls have been produced later. The industrial usages of this rubber include tire inner liners, conveyor belt coatings, adhesives and sealants. In this work, the effects of different factors such as surface treatment and formulation on the adhesion of butyl rubber to metal surfaces have been investigated. These effects have been investigated by Tensile, Tack and FTIR analyses. According to results, it can be seen that, in general, surface treatment improves pressure sensitive adhesion. Acid wash and sand paper were two surface treatments which have been applied. Acid wash has the most impression on adhesion to metal surfaces and in most cases, improves rubber-metal adhesion better than sand paper. Formulation variations used for producing of the samples was the next item which has been investigated. Type of butyl rubber, filler and tackifying agent were different in the samples. According to the tensile test results, using of bromo butyl rubber with two types of tackifying agents, polybutene and coumarone, shows better Tensile strength. This sample needs about 63 N for the beginning of separation between to metal pieces. Tack tests also have been investigated for all the samples. Tack results showed that for this kind of tackiness, using butyl rubber and just one tackifying agent, polybutene, has better tack properties. For this sample, the ball stops at 10 cm which means a good tackiness. Also in this test, surface treatment not only does not improve adhesion, but also in all cases makes it worth.
